Argentina: memorial stone, campsite & Fiambreria Diapolo

100 km drive and only 9 vehicles crossed

From Villa Union in Argentina, we drove over a hundred kilometers south during the day. Along the entire route, we only passed four semi-trucks and five passenger cars. It is interesting to note that on these lonely roads, drivers are even more likely to flash their headlights or wave to greet each other. This is probably because they are aware that they would be heavily dependent on each other in the event of a breakdown.

Annegreth Wuergler

Lonely memorial stone - the crime without a body

On a long straight stretch of road, we drove past a black memorial stone with a Swiss cross painted on it. We wondered what it was all about. After driving a few kilometers, we decided to turn around and get to the bottom of the matter.

The stone commemorates Annegreth Würgler from Switzerland. She was cycling alone in northeastern Argentina for several months and disappeared without a trace at the end of August 2004. There is little information about the case on the German internet.

Unfortunately, Spanish search results on the internet reveal some rather abstruse information about Annegreth's disappearance: several suspects, the judge who sentenced a prime suspect to 18 years in prison despite the lack of a body, who was later convicted of murder himself, a murdered car dealer...

There were many hypotheses about what might have happened to the young tourist. However, all investigations ended in the same dead end.
Very tragic and unbelievable. This story made us very thoughtful.

When in doubt, change campsites

Camping municipal, San José de Cachal. We planned to spend the night at this campsite. While walking around, we were harassed by a scruffy, completely drunk young homeless man. He then left us alone and harassed two other young campers. Sometime later, as we were lying in our deck chairs reading, he ran past us, gesticulating and shouting threats. Without saying a word, Brigitte and I agreed to leave this place.

Fiambreria DIAPOLO

Fiambreria DIAPOLO

A traditional ham shop, highly recommended. We were greeted with a tasting of raw ham, mortadella, salami, and cheese.

We couldn't resist the excellent Serrano ham and homemade bread. We decided to postpone our planned trip to Chile, where there is a total ban on importing ham. Ham took priority.

We skipped the tasting at the El Milagro family winery because of the excessive heat (40 degrees Celsius).
